The art of sampling in hip hop is a precious cornerstone of the genre. This gives hip hop artists an opportunity to collaborate with timeless recordings throughout the decades. Darko the Super's latest album, Great White Buffalo, is a collaboration with Dean Friedman through samples from Dean's catalogue. Dean is a timeless pop songwriter whose songs create a perfect ambiance for a conversation with Darko. Great White Buffalo offers songs about buying a new car, going on a first date as well as eating at McDonald's. The casual subject matter, smooth saxophones and unique production on this album feel like a moment where you are catching up with an old friend.
Darko crafts beats in a style similar to Madlib and while he's not afraid to rap about serious subject matter like questioning his own existence on 'I'm tired and it's a lot of bologna'. He's also not above using Vonnegut and Bukowski references through lunchmeat metaphors like, "the breakfast of champions is ham on rye." Great White Buffalo is Darko's 5th release of 2021 which literally one-ups his 2020 catalogue of 4 releases including his ode to Daniel Johnston, The Devil Defeated, with Steel Tipped Dove on the beats.
Great White Buffalo is a great place to start with the Darko the Super discography. This album is graced with features from Exile, Fatboi Sharif and the smooth saxophone chops of Saxsquatch. Songs like Blues for Daniel and Percy, an ode to DOOM and MF GRIMM, perfectly describe the times we are living in as the instrumental track, Ben's Deli, eases the listener into contemplation. Great White Buffalo wraps up 2021 in a beautiful but honest way. - Nathan Conrad
